Statistical Institute of Belize and Sustainable Development Unit Convenes SDG Data and NSDS Progress Workshop

Belmopan City, September 24, 2026 – The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) and the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management jointly hosted an SDG Data and NSDS Progress Workshop on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza in Belize City. The workshop brought together stakeholders from across the National Statistical System (NSS) to review progress under the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) and present the findings of the 2025 Interim Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Report.

Launched in 2025, the second NSDS (NSDS2) provides a national roadmap for strengthening Belize’s statistical system. It aims to improve the legislative framework, build statistical capacity, strengthen statistical infrastructure, and address existing data gaps across the NSS, helping to ensure that reliable and timely data are available to support evidence-based planning, decision-making, and the monitoring of national development priorities.

During the workshop, the SIB and other participating agencies provided updates on activities carried out during the first year of the NSDS Action Plan, highlighting progress made and identifying areas where additional coordination, technical assistance, and capacity building are needed.

The workshop also presented a costed implementation plan for improving the availability of data to produce SDG indicators, whether through surveys or administrative data sources. Discussions focused on aligning these priorities with ongoing NSDS activities to make the best use of available resources, avoid duplication, and identify opportunities for collaboration and support across the NSS.
