Today, the Statistical Institute of Belize published its latest statistics on the gross domestic product for the 2nd quarter of 2026, the consumer price index, external trade, and the consumer confidence index for August 2026.
Gross Domestic Product
The Statistical Institute of Belize’s preliminary Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates for the second quarter months of April to June 2026 indicated that the value of goods and services produced within the country during that period totalled $1.388 billion. This was an increase of $18.9 million or 1.4 percent when compared to the $1.369 billion produced during the second quarter of 2025

Consumer Price Index
The Statistical Institute of Belize’s monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) survey indicated that, for the month of August 2026, the All-Items CPI, which measures price levels across all categories of regularly purchased consumer goods and services, stood at 125.9. This was an increase from 120.7 recorded in August 2025, indicating an overall national inflation rate of 4.4 percent.
The year-to-date inflation rate for the first eight months of 2026, compared to the same period in 2025, stood at 2.9 percent. Prices were up across most of the major CPI categories, with the overall rise in consumer prices for the first eight months of the year primarily driven by the categories of ‘Transport’, which increased by 7.0 percent, ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ , which rose by 2.2 percent, and ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’, which was up by 2.8 percent.

Merchandise Trade
Belize’s total imports of goods for the month of August 2026 were valued at $295.1 million, representing an increase of 16.5 percent or $41.8 million from the $253.3 million imported in August 2025. Growth in imports during the month was concentrated primarily in ‘Mineral Fuels and Lubricants’, ‘Machinery and Transport Equipment’ and ‘Manufactured Goods’, while goods destined for the ‘Commercial Free Zone’ recorded a notable decline. Merchandise imports for the first eight months of the year, January to August 2026, amounted to $2.207 billion, an increase of 15.8 percent or $301.5 million from $1.906 billion recorded for the same period in 2025.
Domestic merchandise exports for the month of August 2026 totaled $31.1 million, down by 4.9 percent or $1.6 million when compared to August 2025, when exports were valued at $32.7 million. Merchandise exports for the period January to August 2026 totaled $272.8 million, a decrease of 14.0 percent or $44.6 million from $317.4 million recorded for the same period in 2025.

Consumer Confidence Index
For the month of August 2026, the national Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) stood at 42.4, representing a marginal 0.4 percent decrease from 42.6 in July 2026. Following an improvement during the month of July, consumer confidence appeared to resume its generally downward trend in August. The slight reduction was the result of weaker sentiment in the ‘Present’ and ‘Expectations’ components, which overshadowed a small improvement in the ‘Durable Goods’ component.
