AUGUST 2017 – CONSUMER PRICES UP 0.7%, BOTH IMPORTS AND EXPORTS DOWN BY 9.5% AND 61.8% RESPECTIVELY

Today, the Statistical Institute of Belize published its latest statistics on the consumer price index and external trade for the country of Belize.

Consumer Price Index

The All-Items Consumer Price Index for August 2017 stood at 104.4, an increase from 103.6 in August 2016. On average, during this month in 2017, the prices of goods and services regularly purchased by Belizean households were 0.7 percent higher than they were in the same month of 2016. Across the seven municipalities, Dangriga once again recorded the highest increase in consumer prices for the month at 3.8 percent. For the first eight months of 2017, a year-to-date inflation rate of 1.3 percent was recorded.

Merchandise Trade

In August 2017, Belize imported goods valuing $143.2 million. This represented a 9.5 percent or $15 million decrease from the same month last year. Merchandise imports for the first eight months of 2017 totaled $1.2 billion, representing a 5.8 percent or $74 million decrease from the same period last year.The total value of Belize’s domestic exports for the month of August 2017 was $22.7 million, down 61.8 percent or $36.7 million from August 2016. The radical decrease was mainly due to a difference in the timing of bulk sugar shipments for 2017 compared to 2016. Merchandise exports for the period January to August 2017 totaled $327.4 million, up 1.9 percent or $6.2 million from the same period last year.
