The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), in partnership with Statistics Canada (StatCan), hosted two workshops at the Belize Institute of Management in Belize City, over the three days from November 12th to 14th, 2019. The workshops, one on Data Sharing Protocols and another on Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX), were attended by representatives from a number of agencies of the National Statistical System (NSS) as well as staff of the SIB.
The objective of the two-day Data Sharing Protocols (DSP) workshop was to establish the core principles of a DSP to be implemented among the partners comprising Belize’s NSS. It set the stage for the creation of a structured framework for sharing data between the NSS partners, providing guidelines on how to share and access data while maintaining data security and confidentiality. This was complemented by the one-day workshop on SDMX, an internationally accepted set of standards and tools for facilitating the smooth and secure sharing of data across agencies.
The two workshops were jointly funded by the Government of Canada through its Project for the Regional Advancement of Statistics (PRASC) and the SIB. They are part of a larger ongoing initiative, led by the SIB, to organize and build capacity within the country’s NSS, to better provide the data needed by government, international agencies and the country as a whole for planning and informed decision-making.
