The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), today opened the first day of a four-day training course on the use of administrative registers at the Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City.
This course, entitled ‘Towards an Integrated Statistical System Based on Administrative Registers’, will introduce agencies that comprise the Belize National Statistical System (NSS) to the concept of register-based statistics, methods of developing statistical registers, the different parts of a register system, and a working strategy to develop a register-based statistical system. The sessions will be facilitated by lecturers, Anders Wallgren and Britt Wallgren, formerly of Statistics Sweden and experts in the field of register-based statistics.
The use of administrative registers for the production of official statistics is increasingly being promoted as a best practice for national statistical agencies and the broader national statistical systems around the world, both as a substitute to more costly surveys and to supplement and strengthen data collected by other traditional methods. This week’s course is intended to build awareness and initiate dialog with respect to register-based statistics among NSS agencies. It will be followed by a week of one-on-one consultations with several key NSS agencies. These activities are being funded by the IDB as part of its ongoing technical assistance to the SIB’s efforts to organize and strengthen the National Statistical System of Belize.
