FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Data Collection for 2022 Population and Housing Census Completed, Preliminary Results to be Available by Third Quarter 2023
Belmopan, February 24th, 2023 – The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is pleased to announce the completion of data collection for the 2022 Population and Housing Census. The Census, which began on May 12th, 2022, collected data on key demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals and households across the country. The data collection process involved using innovative technologies, such as Electronic Data Capture through Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews and Geospatial technology, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness.
Data processing for the information collected from the several hundred thousand persons living across the country is currently underway. To ensure that the data will be of the highest quality, the SIB will be undertaking various validation activities and will be implementing its comprehensive data processing strategy over the coming months. It will also be carrying out the country’s first Post Enumeration Survey, which will provide an assessment of the accuracy and coverage of the Census. Preliminary Census results are expected to be available by the end of the third quarter of this year, with more detailed thematic reports to follow in the subsequent months.
The 2022 Population and Housing Census is the most comprehensive data collection activity conducted in the country, and the results will provide vital information for the government, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders for many years to come. The data collected will inform the development and implementation of national development plans, including the Medium Term Development Strategy, and assess the country’s progress toward achieving national and global development goals.
The Statistical Institute of Belize wishes to express its appreciation to all individuals and households who participated in the Census. Their cooperation and support were essential to its completion. It also extends its sincere thanks to its dedicated permanent staff and the hundreds of temporary Census staff who went above and beyond to ensure the success of this important national exercise.
